A distillation column with internals and fitted with integrated separation devices (trays, packing, internal exchangers), sized to maximise the efficient fractioning, energy efficiency and hydraulic stability of the installation.
These internals are indispensable for optimising exchange between the liquid and vapour phases during the distillation process. They improve the efficiency of the separation of the constituents of a mixture.
There are two main families of internals:
- Trays: these are perforated or valved horizontal stages. The vapour passes through the trays and comes in contact with the liquid, promoting the material/energy exchange. This is called a tray column.
- Packing: these are structures (rings, saddles, metal or plastic fittings, structured packing) which fill part of the column. They offer a large contact surface between the liquid and the vapour, with less head loss than a tray column.
